Bulgaria Completes a Smooth Transition to the Euro: Over 94% of Lev Cash Already Exchanged
Bulgaria has reached an important milestone in its transition to the euro. According to the latest data released by the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), the country’s currency exchange process has been completed smoothly, with the overwhelming majority of cash already converted into euros.
The successful implementation demonstrates the stability of Bulgaria’s financial system and reinforces confidence among both local businesses and international investors.
More Than 94% of Lev Cash Has Been Exchanged
As of 30 June, approximately BGN 29.4 billion had been exchanged for euros. This represents 94.48% of all lev banknotes and coins that were in circulation at the beginning of the year.
Only around BGN 1.7 billion in cash remains outside the Bulgarian National Bank’s cash operations, indicating that the transition has been widely embraced by businesses and the public.
Stable Euro Cash Supply
The Bulgarian National Bank reports that approximately €8.8 billion in euro banknotes and coins are currently in circulation throughout the country.
According to the central bank, this volume is sufficient to ensure the smooth functioning of the cash economy and to meet the needs of both businesses and consumers.
Throughout the transition period, the banking sector continued to operate normally without disruptions or shortages of cash.
A Well-Organised Currency Transition
The BNB describes the introduction of the euro as an orderly and carefully managed process, carried out in accordance with Bulgaria’s legal framework.
Citizens, businesses and financial institutions experienced no significant operational difficulties during the conversion period, reflecting extensive preparation by both public institutions and commercial banks.
For international investors, this successful transition is another indicator of Bulgaria’s institutional stability and readiness to operate fully within the Eurozone.
Free Exchange at the Bulgarian National Bank Continues
While the mandatory six-month period during which commercial banks were required to exchange lev cash into euros free of charge has now ended, the Bulgarian National Bank continues to offer this service indefinitely and without any fees.
Individuals and companies may continue exchanging lev banknotes and coins at BNB cash offices at no cost.
Some of Bulgaria’s largest commercial banks have also announced that they will continue providing free currency exchange services beyond the mandatory period, although policies may vary between institutions.
A Positive Signal for Investors
The successful currency transition sends a strong message to international businesses considering Bulgaria as an investment destination.
Euro adoption eliminates exchange-rate risk for transactions within the Eurozone, simplifies cross-border business, increases financial transparency and further strengthens Bulgaria’s position as an attractive location for foreign investment.
For companies planning to establish operations in Bulgaria, the country’s successful integration into the Eurozone represents another step toward a more predictable and competitive business environment.
