Bulgaria’s New Car Market Shifts Toward Electrification as Alternative Powertrains Gain Momentum

Bulgaria’s automotive market is undergoing a significant transformation as consumers increasingly embrace electrified vehicles. While sales of new passenger cars continue to grow, the biggest story lies in the changing composition of demand, with hybrid and fully electric models steadily reducing the dominance of conventional gasoline-powered vehicles.

According to the latest data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), the Bulgarian market recorded strong growth in May 2026. A total of 4,293 new passenger cars were registered during the month, representing an 11.5% increase compared to May 2025.

The positive monthly performance also contributed to higher year-to-date results. Between January and May 2026, registrations reached 20,500 new passenger cars, reflecting annual growth of 5.3%.

Hybrid Vehicles Lead the Market’s Transformation

The most impressive growth came from conventional hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Registrations more than doubled compared to the same month last year, climbing by over 143% to 292 units in May.

The longer-term trend is equally remarkable. During the first five months of the year, HEV sales increased by more than 100%, reaching 1,219 vehicles. As a result, their market share expanded from just over 3% last year to nearly 6% in 2026.

Fully Electric Cars Continue Their Rapid Expansion

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) remain the fastest-growing zero-emission segment in absolute numbers. Registrations rose by almost 87% in May, reaching 362 new vehicles and accounting for 8.4% of all new passenger car sales during the month.

From January through May, Bulgarian consumers purchased 1,565 fully electric vehicles, representing annual growth of 87.2%. Their market share has now climbed to 7.6%, highlighting the country’s accelerating transition toward sustainable mobility.

Plug-in Hybrids Experience Temporary Slowdown

Unlike the strong performance of HEVs and BEVs, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) recorded a modest decline during May, with registrations falling by approximately 19%.

However, the broader picture remains positive. Over the first five months of 2026, PHEV sales increased by 63%, demonstrating that demand for electrified vehicles continues to strengthen despite short-term monthly fluctuations.

Traditional Engines Lose Market Share

Although gasoline-powered vehicles still dominate Bulgaria’s automotive market, their position is gradually weakening.

Gasoline car registrations increased slightly in absolute terms during May, supported by the overall expansion of the market. Nevertheless, their market share fell to 73.3%, down from 77.5% a year earlier.

The year-to-date figures reveal an even more pronounced trend. Gasoline vehicles are the only major segment to record a decline in cumulative sales, falling by 1.9% compared to the same period last year. Consequently, their market share has dropped from 78.1% to 72.7%.

Diesel vehicles, meanwhile, have shown greater resilience. Registrations increased modestly in May and continued to post positive year-to-date growth, allowing diesel-powered models to slightly increase their market share to 10.5%.

Electrification Is Reshaping Bulgaria’s Automotive Future

Combined sales of hybrid electric vehicles, battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids now account for 15.2% of Bulgaria’s new car market during the first five months of 2026. This represents a substantial increase compared with just 8.5% during the same period in 2025.

The latest figures indicate that Bulgaria is following the broader European trend toward vehicle electrification. While internal combustion engines continue to represent the majority of sales, consumer preferences are clearly evolving as hybrid and electric technologies become increasingly mainstream.

If current growth rates continue, alternative powertrains are expected to claim an even larger share of the Bulgarian automotive market in the coming years, driven by technological improvements, expanding charging infrastructure and growing consumer confidence in electrified mobility.
